Oil Painting Beginners – Sophie Ploeg

Workshops  |  Oil Painting Beginners

Friday 5 May 2017
Fully Booked
Always wanted to learn oil painting but never knew where to start? Got a set of oil paints lying around but not sure what to do with them? Come to this workshop to learn the basics, ask any and all questions and have a go. I will explain the what and the how of oil painting, we will discuss brands, brushes, mediums and supports and work from a simple still life to explore the painting process.

The kitchen has limited space: there is room for 2 students using table easels and around 3 small floor easels. Feel free to bring your own small floor easel if you have one (let me know), but I can provide one for you as well.  We can extend the table to accommodate more table easels if needed.

  • Time: 10am – 4pm
  • Where: kitchen, Thornbury, South Gloucestershire
  • All materials provided
  • Maximum no of students: 5
  • Level: Absolute Beginner
  • Parking on drive or on street
  • Coffee/tea provided
  • Please bring a packed lunch
  • £ 80

Materials provided:

  • Oil paint
  • canvas board of varying sizes
  • kitchen towelling
  • Selection of brushes
  • disposable palette paper
  • paper, pencils if needed.

If you like to bring your own materials:

  • Canvas. If you prefer to bring your own canvas board or canvas please do so. Keep it small.
  • Brushes. For example a selection of bristle and synthetic filberts, some synthetic round ones for detail. A basic selection will be provided. Use small brushes as we will work small.
  • Oil paint. Oil paint will be provided. But if you want to use your own I would recommend a decent quality brand. To keep things simple and enhance the learning opt for a limited palette of just red, blue, yellow, brown and white.
  • Palette.  Disposable palette paper provided.
  • Something to put your dirty brushes and palette on/in for when you take a break and/or go home. Your painting will be wet when you go home!

! No turps or solvents! Please do not bring any toxic solvents as we would like to keep the air clean. We have our lunch in the same small space. We can wipe clean brushes on kitchen roll and if needed a quick clean in solvent (provided) at the end of the day.

Please do not bring too much as space is limited. If you have any questions about the materials or the workshop, feel free to ask!
